Art

Intent:

The purpose of Art and Design is to give all children the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express their ideas and experiences in a visual or tactile form. It should ignite their imagination and is a fundamental means of personal expression.

Alongside being an essentially practical subject, art should provide the opportunities for reflection and with increasing sensitivity, children should possess the ability to make informed, critical responses to their own artwork and that of others.

At Sacred Heart Primary School, we see Art and design as an important part of our curriculum that helps pupils to develop their creative and practical skills. This subject also helps to build self-esteem, self-awareness and visual literacy skills. Following the Art and Design national curriculum

Aims - Art and design offers the opportunities to:

  • Enable all children to have access to a wide range of art experiences

  • Develop a basic understanding of the basic elements of art: line, tone, colour, texture, pattern, shape, form and space

  • Become confident in drawing, painting, sculpture and other forms of art and craft design techniques

  • Enable children to record from first-hand experiences and their own imagination, and to select their own ideas to use in their work

  • Communicate ideas and feelings through a range of different media, tools and techniques

  • Gain some knowledge of artists, craft makers and designers and understand the historical and cultural development of their art form

  • Build on self confidence and enjoyment of the subject and encourage them to explore their creativity

  • Develop skills of evaluation and judgement alongside being able to use visual/artistic language when discussing their own artwork as well as that of others

  • Increase confidence when evaluating work in order to develop future artwork

Implementation:

Teaching - Art is taught through the creative curriculum throughout the school, from Y1-6.

Termly topics are taught throughout the year groups and are adapted to be age appropriate. Children will have the opportunity to use a broad range of materials and resources, including I.T. The topics taught will always include one of the following skills: drawing, painting, printing, textiles/collage or sculpture.

We have a long-term plan that maps out the skills covered in each year group. To compliment, the medium-term planning is used to give details of the skills taught in relation to the topic or project. The medium-term plans will follow the process of the skills as follows: exploring and experimenting with tools and materials, observation, sketching, creating the piece of art, evaluating, assessment and progression.

All children in KS1 and KS2 have their own sketchbooks that will move through the school with them. The sketchbook shows a continuity of skills and the progression made through school.

The sketchbook is a valuable tool as it can be used to help pupils develop their ideas through the collection of visual and other information.

Where appropriate, examples of the children’s work will be celebrated through display to stimulate children’s creative abilities.

Impact:

Assessment is based on a combination of teacher assessment and pupil self-assessment.

After each topic, assessments are used to make judgements so that teachers can report to parents at the end of the year. The children’s sketchbooks provide a valuable source of the children’s development within the subject. These should include both self-assessments and teacher feedback.
